Invitation to the Exhibition in Honor of prof. Kubeš
The exhibition titled “prof. JUDr. Vladimír Kubeš – the Founding Restorer of the Faculty of Law” can be viewed from Monday, April 27, 2026, in the premises of the Central Library of the Faculty of Law of Masaryk University. It was organized on the occasion of the completion of a multi-year project to publish six books from the written estate of Vladimír Kubeš and, at the same time, as a commemoration of the recent anniversary of the issuance of Government Decree No. 35/1969 Coll., on the establishment of the Faculty of Law at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Brno.
Vladimír Kubeš (1908–1988) belonged to the leading representatives of Brno legal philosophy of the 20th century.
He was active at the Faculty of Law in Brno, where he was influenced by the normative theory of František Weyr. Originally, he was a civilist (civil law specialist) and, in the post-war period, he participated in the preparation of the draft of a non-communist constitution. After 1948, he was forced to leave the faculty for political reasons; in the subsequent political trial, he was sentenced to thirteen years of imprisonment, part of which he served performing forced labor in the uranium mines in the Jáchymov and Příbram regions. After his release, he was forced to work in manual labor occupations.
During the period of the Prague Spring, he significantly participated in the restoration of the Brno Faculty of Law.
After his second forced departure from the faculty during the onset of normalization, he lectured on legal philosophy for several years at the Vienna Faculty of Law and, at the same time, collaborated intensively with the Vienna Hans Kelsen-Institut, thereby continuing the tradition of Brno normative legal science. Despite unfavorable conditions, he continued his extensive manuscript work, which, however, could only be published in its entirety after 1989. His work is today once again gaining deserved attention.
The exhibition presents Kubeš's scholarly career, his life fates during the period of political upheavals, and his fundamental contribution to Czech legal science.
